DLs-MarionetteTopic – David Larsen’s Marionette

The topic of this train ride was first presented to Jason and Ron from listener David Larsen. He told the story of a strange marionette sent to him as a gift from his uncle in Afghanistan (pictured-right). He never knew why, but the little puppet gave David troubles and bad dreams. Ten years later the doll is sent to Jason and the investigation begins. This podcast tells that story!

OTR Story – Fugue in C-minor

Our OTR story comes from the series Suspense and was suggested by a listener, James Thompson of New Mexico. It stars two great actors Ida Lupino and Vincent Price. The story was written by the accomplished screenwriter Lucille Fletcher and tells a tale of pipe organs and murder.  It is called Fugue in C-minor and first aired on June 1, 1944.

Our OTR tale comes from the masters of yarns, Suspense. It is told to us by two of the best radio actors of the time, William Conrad and Agnes Moorehead. It is a simple tale, one that could be happening right now, in any city across America. It is a frightening tale one quietly calculated to keep you in suspense. It is called, The Whole Town is Sleeping and first aired on August 31, 1958.

Programing Note: In the podcast I refer to Agnes Moorehead’s character on Bewitched as Amanda. In fact it was Endora. Thanks to listener Mike for catching that one.

OTR Story – The Dream (Boris Karloff)

Our story on this episode of The Horror Express comes from the series Lights Out and stars the great Boris Karloff as a mad man on trial for murder. Lights Out was created by Wyllis Cooper and then eventually taken over by Arch Oboler. It aired on different networks, at various times, from 1934 to 1947 and the series eventually made the transition to television. Lights Out was one of the earliest radio horror programs, predating even Suspense and Inner Sanctum. The creepy tale is called The Dream and first aired April 23, 1938.

The Horror Express – Out Of Body

What is an out-of-body experience? The certified and verified definition is: An out-of-body experience (OBE or sometimes OOBE) is an experience that typically involves a feeling of floating outside one’s body and, in some cases, the feeling of perceiving one’s physical body from a place outside one’s body.

I think that is a pretty poor definition, and because of this Jason and I decided to do an episode on the subject. While you wait for the Horror Express podcast to publish, here are my thoughts on the subject.

Let’s start off with what I think should be the definition of a OOBE: They are eerie sensations, more common than one might think. For example: A man describes feeling a shadowy figure standing behind him, then turns around to find no one there. A woman feels herself leaving her body and floating in space, then looking down on her corporeal self. These experiences are often attributed by those who have them as being paranormal. However, neuroscientists tell us they can be induced by delivering a mild electric current to specific spots in the brain.

It is true! A zap to a brain region called the angular gyrus has resulted in a sensations that the patient described as hanging from the ceiling, looking down at their body. In another test electrical current produced an uncanny feeling that someone was behind the patient and was intent on interfering with their actions. These are confirmed experiments. Follow this link to learn more.

So does that mean that all OBE’s are induced? I have to say the jury is still out on that one, but this may help to explain at least some of these experiences.

The Horror Express:

horrorexpress250x250We have a new website for the Horror Express. That is not really new news, but we just cleaned things up and gave it a much needed simple URL. You can now type thehorrorexpress.com and bing, bang, bong you are there (Don’t forget the “the”).

Jason and I are working on the new episode of the show. Show number 16’s topic will be: Out Of Body Experiences. Jason will have a very special interview for that show that I can’t wait to hear. Also, the response to the Haunted Doll series has been off the charts and we have more stories and questions from you guys. Thanks for that!

Jason and I know that you want more of The Horror Express podcasts. Jason is a full time radio producer and photographer and I have my editing business. So, we get them done as fast we can. However, starting in late August or early September Jason and I will make use of the HE website and start to publish a blog. We hope that you guys will join us and continue your support there.

Most Often Asked Question to Ron:

I have to say that you guys are becoming more active with the show every week and I love it! Thank-you so much for all of the comments, suggestions and stories! The most often asked question I get is,  “how do I get my story to you?” We have talked about this before and I think it is worth going over again. There are basically three ways to tell your story. You can tell it to me and I will write it up, you can write it yourself and send it to me via email (or the contact section of the website), or you can come on the show and tell it live! The choice is yours and I do hope you make that choice. Everyone has some story to tell and we want to hear it.

Did you know that Ron’s Amazing Stories has an archive?

It’s true! I have taken the show over to the Internet Archive and they have provided space to me to store the older episodes. Right now there are about 70ish shows there, but I will be moving more this summer (As soon as figure out how). You can check it out at https://archive.org/details/archived-RAS-episodes.

The Internet Archive, also known as The Wayback Machine, is a non-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, websites, and more.

HE #16 – Haunted Dolls Two

Welcome to the 16th episode of the Horror Express. In this program Jason and I revisit Haunted Dolls. This time we have stories, questions and comments all sent in by you guys. The OTR story for this show is a creepy tale about shadow people that should send a chill or two through your body.  So, please join us for this train ride into the unknown.

Pictured below are the two dolls Jason, during the podcast, labeled as having energy attached. He does not called them haunted, but he doesn’t say that they aren’t. I can say that one called Betsy has creeped me out for years and I have always thought she had a strange vibe. Cracked face is not the real name of the second doll, that would be Megan.

Topic – Haunted Dolls Part 2

A haunted doll is a handmade or manufactured doll or stuffed animal that is reported to be cursed or possessed in some way. The earliest report of a haunted doll goes back to Ancient Egypt. The enemies of Ramses III attempted to use wax images of his likeness to bring about his death. The dolls used in this ritual were said to be living and would curse anyone who bore their resemblance.

Horror Express #15 – Haunted Dolls

Welcome to the 15th episode of the Horror Express. In this program Jason and I talk about the truth surrounding Haunted Dolls. Also, we have what I believe to be the scariest story to date. It is a creepy old time radio story that finds three young women facing a poltergeist. If that was not enough we have lots of questions and comments from you guys! So please join us for this train ride into the unknown.
